Originally from Australia, classroom teacher, lecturer, Jan had a diverse background as a principal, private tutor and curriculum consultant. Jan liked to say that she catered to children who suffered from 'NBT' ¿ children who had 'never been taught' ¿ preferring that label rather than the ones many educators, consultants and parents attach to children. She taught in public and independent schools at all grade levels as well as managed and taught children from many backgrounds in Australia, the United Kingdom and Canada.After serving as the first Executive Director of the Children's Own Museum in Toronto, and then the head of public programming and education at the Royal Ontario Museum, she founded her own school ¿ the Howlett Academy ¿ to provide a back-to-basics, common sense approach to education for her own children.
